Corrections!

The middle stitch on the Between the Points chart on round 31 should be a sl 1, k2tog, psso, not a knit stitch.

For the Points of the Star chart, row 37, there are no k1 before and after the decrease. For the How to Expand the Chart, row 67, the 4 K2tog are backwards, wrong symbol typed in.

Show #66 Notes

Steve and Kathy announce that they have purchased Beader’s Paradise, a local bead store in Northampton. It has been renamed to WEBS – America’s Bead Store, and we’re very excited that we will be moving down the street from the yarn store in April at the Smith Glass building.
We’ve purchased lots of new inventory and are very excited for all of the new products. We’re not online yet, but we do hope to be up and running online this summer. The bead store will also feature WEBS discount on beads!

We’re currently located on Button St., which is off of Masonic St. We’re between J.Rich and Woodstar Café. Hours are Mon-Sat 10am-5:30pm and Thursdays until 8. We have all the same great Beader’s Paradise employees and plan on getting classes up and running very soon.

Knitalong with Pixie:
All of the charts and instructions are up on the site for the Hemlock Ring Throw.
We will begin our colorwork series with a mitten knitalong. We will be working the Bird in Hand Mittens by Kate Gilbert.

We’ve had a lot of questions lately about felting, so we’re going to answer some more questions.
Felting is basically “matted” wool. The fibers lock together to form a fabric.

Is there a difference between felting a fulling?
According to Bev Geleskas, felting is defined as creating fabric from wool batting or fleece. Fulling creates the fabric from woven or knitted fabric.

You need moisture and heat to felt. The more friction you have, the tighter the fabric will be.

Is felting reversible?
No! It is not reversible. The only thing you can do is stretch it when wet.

How can you control the felting process?
Felting is not a science. There are no formulas for creating a felted item. You don’t know what’s going to come out, but that’s part of the fun of it! You do have to do samples if you want some control over it because all yarns and colors felt very differently. Superwash wool will not felt. Some wools with a percentage of synthetic fiber will felt.

Can I felt in a front loading machine?
Yes, if the water level falls before the level when the machine is stopped. If it is a machine where the door remains locked through the entire cycle, it is not possible. You can felt by hand. Just knead it like you were making bread. Be patient. It will happen before your eyes!

Guest: Brooklyn Tweed aka Jared tells us about the inspiration for the Hemlock Ring Throw and how he started his blog and how he began knitting.
Check out his blog: www.brooklyntweed.blogspot.com

Knitalong with Pixie:
We wrap up the throw.
Don’t over-think the bind off! Just do what the directions say and you will have fantastic results.
Tips for Blocking – Pixie put the throw in her washer and let is soak and sent it through the spin cycle. She then centered the blanket on her blocking board and stretched it across the board. Bring a spray bottle with you to keep the project moist. Keep stretching! Lace needs to be stretched. She then stretched the project and pinned each of the lines at the points. When it dries, you will probably have some spots that are rippled, so Pixie steamed the sections separately to smooth everything out.

Events
Sunday, February 3rd – Annual Big Game Event, Mary Beth Temple will also be joining us.
Saturday, February 9th – Wenlan Chia of Twinkle visits and introduces her new book.

Guest: Christy Clark
Instead of doing the Hurricane Sock Party this year, she is asking people to donate to the Make it Right Foundation. She would like every knitter who can to donate to the Foundation at makeitrightnola.org. She is calling the project “The House that Yarn Built” If just 7,800 knitters donated the equivalent of one skein of sock yarn ($20), a house in New Orleans will be built. When donating, be sure to select The House that Yarn Built.
For more information, visit thehousethatyarnbuilt.com.

Knitalong with Pixie:
Keep careful track of pattern rounds!
Once you realize the symmetry of the pattern and see the section between the points of the star, the pattern will begin to make sense.
You can mark the middle and stitch at the top of the stars to help yourself visualize the pattern.
Watch out for Round 33!

Knitalong with Pixie:
We kick off the Hemlock Ring Throw!
Pixie gives some tips on starting the throw. She did have some issues with the dpns. She suggests using magic loop or using a crochet cast on for working the first row. She took a size J crochet hook, chained 8 and joined with a slip stitch. She then took out the hook and put the dpn in, creating the first stitch. Pick up and knit in the next two back loops of the chain. Take a second dpn and do three more, and a third to pick up three stitches. Begin the pattern on round 2 and work on dpns until you feel comfortable to switch.
Be diligent about counting each round! With yo’s the likelihood of errors increases!

Follow directions on doily through round 13.
How to yarnover: bring the yarn from the back to the front, lay it over the top of the right needle and work the stitch.
Round 14: You will be working 9 stitches in 1 strand of yarn. Make sure to move your yarn to the front and back depending on whether you are knitting or purling. You will have 88 sts at the end of this row.

Round 25 – place a marker on each side of the 6th stitch in each knit 11 sequence. These stitches will continue as a straight line no matter how far you expand the chart.

Events
Sunday, February 3rd – Annual Big Game Event, Mary Beth Temple will also be joining us.
Saturday, February 9th – Wenlan Chia of Twinkle visits and introduces her new book.

She explains how Knitting Liberally came to be. It was “born” at a WEBS event! The group has been meeting since October. They meet every Tuesday from 5pm-7pm at The Yellow Sofa on Main St. in Northampton. Afterwards, they meet the Drinking Liberally group over at the Northampton Brewery.
Not only do they meet to talk politics, the group does community projects. Their current project is a partnership with NELCWIT (New England Learning Center for Women in Transition). They are knitting toys for children.

Knitalong with Pixie: Embellishments
Borders, Edgings and Trimmings
Cast Ons and Bind Offs are the heart and soul of knitting, especially when knitting a garment.

Pixie’s Favorite Cast Ons
Picot Cast On – lovely decorative edge
Provisional Cast On – very helpful to know; it leaves your options open
Tubular Cast On – most professional cast on; has a beautiful edge
Beaded Cast On – decorative and sturdy, but does not have much stretch. Keep stockinette from rolling.
Braided Cast On – cast on two colors
Long Tail Ribbed Cast On – start out with a ribbed bottom right away

Pixie’s Favorite Bind Offs
Picot Bind Off – great for neck edges, sock cuffs, elastic and decorative
Tubular Bind Off – creates nice rolled edge – not good for neck lines
Invisible Bind Off – grafts knit stitches from RS to WS using kitchener stitch
Beaded Bind Off – creates firm edge
I-Cord Bind Off – aka applied i-cord. It is a lovely, tailored look
Stem Stitch Bind Off – subtle, flat edge

Pixie recommends investing in Nancy Wiseman’s Finishing Techniques
