This pattern is named the pattern looks like a mermaid’s tail, which according to the many myths and legends of river mermaids, sirens, water sprites, are often referred to as nixies. Nixie is two patterns in one as it contains both the Lorelei and Melusine patterns. This pattern contains instructions for a pair of lacey fingerless mitts and matching cowl. The specifications for each pattern are as follows:
Fingerless Mitts:
Difficulty: Intermediate
Size: Using a fabric measuring tape, measure the hand around the widest point. Subtract 1 inch (2.5 cm). Make the size that is closest to that measurement. This stitch is very stretchy. The small sized mitt easily stretches to comfortably fit a hand with a 7½-inch (19 cm) circumference.
Finished Measurements: 6 [7] inches; 15 [18] cm circumference
Yarn Requirements: fingering weight; 185 [220] yards; 169 [200] meters
Needles: US 1 (2.25 mm) needles
Gauge: 9 sts and 11 rows to 1 inch (2.5 cm) in twisted rib (relaxed), worked in the round
Cowl:
Difficulty: Easy-Intermediate
Finished Measurements: 12 x 30.5 inches
Yarn Requirements: fingering weight, held double; 600 yards
Needles: US 9 (5.5 mm) circular needles, or size required for gauge
Gauge: 19 sts and 23 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) in stitch pattern
